Story Summary
A detective investigating a series of mysterious murders discovers a pattern: every victim was a powerful person who
escaped justice through money, influence, or corruption. The only connection between them is a mysterious figure known
as the Gardener—a wealthy, highly intelligent man who has taken justice into his own hands.
At first, the Gardener appears to be a cold and calculating killer. But as the investigation continues, the detective discovers
a contradiction. The Gardener does not kill out of hatred or pleasure. He carries the weight of every life he takes, breaking
down after each act and mourning the people he believes he had to remove.
The detective uncovers that the Gardener's mission comes from a desire to protect others. He sees society as a garden, where
those who spread suffering must be removed when the justice system fails. But beneath his calm exterior is a deeply wounded
man struggling with guilt, anger, and self hatred.
As the detective gets closer to the truth, he discovers the Gardener's list contains one final name the Gardener himself. Deep
down, he knows that in his attempt to save others, he has slowly destroyed the person he once was.
When the final target is confronted, the Gardener reaches the breaking point between the two sides of himself, the man who
believes the target must be eliminated and the man who still believes every life has value. In the end, he chooses compassion
over vengeance, saving the very person he came to kill.
The Gardener's final act proves that redemption is possible, but it comes at a cost. His journey reveals the central truth of the
story: a person cannot save anyone by destroying themselves

THE LAST NAME
Scene 1
INT. POLICE OFFICE – NIGHT
A dimly lit office.
The door CREAKS open.
A hand pushes it wider.
Rows of filing cabinets line the walls. Crime scene photographs and overflowing case files cover every surface.
THE DETECTIVE steps inside. Mid-30s. Exhausted. The kind of tired that sleep can't fix.
At the far desk sits THE CAPTAIN, reading a file.
Without looking up, he slides another case file across the desk.
The Detective catches it.
Only then does the Captain meet his eyes.
A clock TICKS.
CAPTAIN
We have another one.
The Detective doesn't open the file.
DETECTIVE
Find somebody else.
CAPTAIN
I did.
(beat)
Three of them.
None got anywhere.
Silence.
The Detective finally opens the folder.
Crime scene photos.
A wealthy man.
A flower resting beside the body.
DETECTIVE
The Gardener.
The Captain nods.
CAPTAIN
This one was Samuel fisher.
Gang leader.
Money bought him freedom every time.
The Detective flips through more photographs.
DETECTIVE
I told you...
I'm done chasing ghosts.
CAPTAIN
This isn't a ghost.
It's a man.
And every person he kills should've been in prison years ago.
The Detective closes the file.
DETECTIVE
Then maybe someone else already delivered justice.
The Captain leans forward.
CAPTAIN
Justice isn't murder.
A long silence.
CAPTAIN (CONT'D)
Finish this case...
I'll approve your leave.
Go somewhere.
Forget about her.
The Detective stares at him.
DETECTIVE
One week.
He takes the file and walks out.
CUT TO:
INT. BAR – NIGHT
The room is crowded.
Smoke hangs beneath yellow lights.
Laughter.
Cards.
Glasses.
Music.
Hidden among the crowd sits THE DETECTIVE.
Hat pulled low.
Watching.
Across the room sits JOSEPH ROMANO.
Late sixties.
Expensively dressed.
Nervous.
Several BODYGUARDS pretend to enjoy drinks while quietly watching every entrance.
A DRUNK MAN stumbles toward Romano.
DRUNK MAN
Joe!
Romano freezes.
The drunk crashes into the table, spilling food and drinks everywhere.
ROMANO
Get him away from me!
The bodyguards immediately grab the drunk.
He struggles.
DRUNK MAN
Joe!
I need to tell you—
His voice is cut short as they're dragged outside.
The Detective watches.
A beat.
BANG.
A gunshot echoes outside.
The entire bar falls silent.
Romano looks around and the others go back to their drinks the laughing sounding forced.
He stands to leave.
The Detective is already moving.
CUT TO:
EXT. ALLEY – NIGHT
Rain falls.
The Detective rounds the corner.
Romano and his bodyguards hurry down the alley.
Their breath hangs in the cold air.
Then,
Romano stops.
Slowly...
shaking
He turns.
At the far end of the alley stands a lone figure beneath a warm streetlight.
THE GARDENER.
Perfectly still.
His face hidden in shadow.
No weapon.
No words.
He simply begins walking.
Never faster.
Never slower.
The guards rush him.
The Gardener sidesteps the first.
A cloth covers the man's mouth.
One precise strike.
He collapses.
The second charges.
Another controlled movement.
Another body hits the pavement.
The Gardener never hurries.
Never wastes movement.
Within seconds—
Silence.
Only Romano remains.
His legs give out.
He falls to his knees.
ROMANO
Please...
Please...
I'll give you anything.
Money.
Whatever you want.
The Gardener kneels in front of him.
He gently brushes the rain from Romano's face.
Almost...
Compassionately.
GARDENER
I never wanted your money.
A tear forms in his eye.
GARDENER (CONT'D)
I wanted you to become someone who cares for others.
Romano begins sobbing.
The Gardener closes his eyes.
A painful breath.
Then—
CUT TO BLACK.
A single GUNSHOT echoes through the night.
EXT: ally night
The gardener holding the dead old man crying, the camera at different angles as the detective rushes over. Neither man says a word.
The Gardener stands, turns.
He walks away.
Never rushing.
Never looking back.
The Detective watches him disappear into the rain.
Unable to move.
Unable to follow.
Only the sound of rain remains.
Cut to black
